Squalane, one of the best emollients on the market, occurs naturally in the lipidic layers of the skin and prevents moisture loss while restoring the skin’s suppleness and flexibility. Its exceptional moisturizing properties and ability to penetrate the skin have long made squalane a favorite amongst cosmetics and personal care formulators.

Unfortunately, until now, squalane has been primarily sourced either from highly controversial shark liver or from olive oil. While olive oil is a more eco-friendly source than shark liver, it is subject to price volatility and limited availability, due to its dual use as a food product. Because of these concerns, cosmetic product formulators have increasingly omitted squalane from their formulations.
