Our StoryWhen our founders met at UC Berkeley, they realized they shared a vision. It was a clear vision of a company with a collaborative spirit – a company that would take the promise of synthetic biology and deliver impactful solutions to the world’s most significant problems. Through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the Institute for OneWorld Health, Amyris’ first mission was to develop the technology for a consistent supply of the low-cost anti-malarial drug, artemisinin. It was a long shot, but we did it. We have granted a royalty-free license to this technology to sanofi-aventis for the commercialization of artemisinin-based drugs. Out of this success, Amyris emerged with a proven technology platform and a unique company built on a foundation of innovation for the greater good.
