Business Strategy
Amyris is positioning itself to become a leading provider of renewable specialty chemicals and transportation fuels worldwide. Our initial molecule, farnesene, can serve as the basis for a wide range of products, enabling us to optimize our product mix and reduce our exposure to any one end market. We intend to commercialize our first products in choose specialty chemical markets in 2011 using contract manufacturers. Amyris own initial production facilities will be located in Brasil. Though our technology is designed to utilize a variety of feedstocks, our efforts are currently focused on sugarcane. Locating our production facilities in Brasil will allow us to leverage a mature sugar growing and fermentation infrastructure, lower our production costs and access a feedstock that is largely insulated from price volatility. We will work with Brasilian sugar and ethanol producers to build new, "bolt-on" facilities adjacent to their existing mills instead of building new "greenfield" facilities, thereby reducing the capital required to establish and scale our production. This will offer our production partners the opportunity to diversify and grow their product lines. Our first production facility, a joint venture in Brasil with Usina São Martinho, will be operational in the second quarter of 2012. To build the capabilities we will need to import and distribute our renewable fuels products in the U.S., we have established our subsidiary Amyris Fuels, LLC. Amyris Fuels currently generates revenues through the sale of third party ethanol to wholesale customers through a network of terminals in the southeastern U.S.
